One dimensional

I haven't been tattooing for that long, 3 years to be exact....I started off doing it as a hobby because I needed the extra money. At the time, I was doing post-graduate studies full time and having a family also to support was a bit of a challenge so tattooing became a very useful source of cash...99% of what I now know about tattooing in terms of technique are all self-acquired. I started off at home and I now know that going straight to a shop and learning from a professional would have made the journey alot easier and much faster....I would have jumped light years ahead. I never intended to be a full time tattooist as other things looked alot closer in the direction I was heading with my studies...I majored in Art History and wrote an average thesis on the traditional Tongan practice of lalava (lashing)...it was somewhat disappointing because I had put heart and soul into researching and writing the thesis. Working in the Arts and Cultural sector slowly became distant while tattooing became evermore an immediate platform. I was very lucky to be accepted by Han at Dreamhands Tattoos because my short time there in that professional environment gave me confidence and Han was always very supportive, kind and helpful...But the reason I am writing this is because I am uncertain as to why most tattooists choose a specific style to work with and put themselves out there as specialists in that style. I have been given many advices about this...pick a style you're good at and confident about and run with it, concentrate on it and refine your skills and develop yourself as that...for that, people will seek out you for what you specialize in...I know that this works in cases where there are few tattoo artists in one shop where you have an artist handling Polynesian and Maori style and another handling portraits and another colors and etc..I can also see why this would be very helpful because I think an artist's development in terms of skills will certainly advance quicker if he or she concentrates on a specific style...with my little experience, my advice for someone just starting would be just go for goal, try everything and anything, you're development as an artist will be a little slower that another who is concentrating their energy on one specific style but it will be way more rewarding to yourself as an artist to be...I guess multi-dimensional. 3 years ain't that long and I would probably change my view as I advance more in terms of skills and techniques but as of now, being confident in all styles might just make people settle for you than seeking out different artists for different parts of their story. Because people nowadays aren't just looking to tell their story through one specific style.....be an artist that is able to speak of God in different styles, to speak of piece and love in various motifs, to comfortably speak in all aesthetic forms....to speak of tradition in different colors and the present in grey and black and white....
